Thank you for sharing this. Beautifully written, and a great example of how to love our flawed and human parents. Some still just babies in bigger bodies, unable to resolve their own childhood traumas. I also have a complicated relationship with my father, who spent most of my childhood up until my early 20s, incarcerated. We had a pen pal relationship for so long, and now he’s out making up for lost time in an old man’s body. But he is trying.

That’s exactly right! I think our generation is doing a lot to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Sometimes it’s necessary to completely detach from a damaged parent, but there’s so much healing that can come from learning to relate to them with boundaries.
